Gasperini’s team, after two league defeats against Napoli and Cagliari, bounced back in the Europa League against Celtic, winning 3-0 at Celtic Park thanks to a brace from Evan Ferguson. Two well-organized teams with a clear identity will face each other at the Olimpico. Monday night’s match will also be a clash between the best defense in the league, that of the Giallorossi (8 goals conceded), and the second-best defense in Serie A, that of Como (11 goals conceded, tied with Milan and Lazio).

Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Roma-Como:

“I’m very curious and I think it’s a positive thing to face so many matches close together in January. It’s a new experience for me, for the players, and for the club: when you have little time to prepare for a game, you have to manage everything differently.

“I believe the defeat in Milan was entirely my responsibility. The players gave everything, they ran hard and tried their best. There are things to improve, both on my side and theirs, but this team has shown quality and a great attitude. In the last 25 matches, we’ve lost three: two against Inter and one against Bologna. The team competes, never gives up, and always wants to play with identity. That’s what I want to see: where we are and where we want to go.

“In Rome, I expect a physical match against a team that will attack us and has a lot of quality up front. We know Gasperini will prepare a game where we won’t have any breathing room. We’ll need a great performance if we want to bring home points.”

Roma

The Giallorossi, who will line up in Gian Piero Gasperini’s traditional 3-4-2-1 formation, will be without the suspended Celik, a real pillar of Roma’s defense so far this season. While Roma have the best defense in Serie A, they are also among the bottom ten teams in the league in terms of goals scored, with just 15. In attack, Gasperini has tried out various combinations, fielding either two second strikers and a center forward, Artem Dovbyk or Evan Ferguson, or alternatives with a ‘false 9’, in this case Paulo Dybala or Tommaso Baldanzi, in an attempt to give opposing defenses fewer points of reference. In the first half of the season, the Giallorossi’s key player has undoubtedly been Matias Soulé, who has scored four goals, working as a true attacking playmaker on the right wing and inside. In a team as intense, organized, and physical as Roma, Bryan Cristante and Manu Koné, a midfield duo with complementary characteristics, are excelling, providing balance and rhythm to Gasperini’s team. The impact of Brazilian winger Wesley, who arrived in the summer from Flamengo and immediately became a key player in the team, has also been significant. He has been used on both flanks, exploiting the verticality he can provide to offensive maneuvers, as demonstrated, for example, in the goal scored against Cremonese.

Shielded by the Cristante-Koné pairing, the Giallorossi’s three-man defense of Mancini, Ndicka, and Hermoso has been phenomenal so far this season, although Ivorian Ndicka may not be available for the match due to his departure for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Previous encounters

The two teams have faced each other 16 times in Rome, with Roma winning 11, drawing four, and Como winning one. Como’s only victory came in the 1949/59 season, in the first ever match between the two clubs in the capital. Lipizer’s goal proved decisive in the 1-0 final score.

Heather O’Reilly: “It Is a Wonderful Opportunity to Play at the Sinigaglia, It Adds Value for Women’s Football in Como and Italy” https://comofootball.com/en/heather-oreilly-it-is-a-wonderful-opportunity-to-play-at-the-sinigaglia-it-adds-value-for-womens-football-in-como-and-italy/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 17:05:24 +0000 https://comofootball.com/heather-oreilly-giocare-al-sinigaglia-e-unopportunita-fantastica-e-una-grande-vetrina-per-il-calcio-femminile-a-como-e-in-italia/ Ahead of the match between Como 1907 Women and San Marino Academy, which will take place on Sunday, December 14, at 2:30 p.m. at the Sinigaglia Stadium, Head of Women’s Football Heather O’Reilly commented on the event: “ Every time we do, it is an honor for the players, and fantastic visibility for the community to see these incredible players live. The players train hard every day and are putting on a great product, and more exposure to it only adds value for football here in Como and across Italy”, continuing then with the right attitude to have: “Football seasons have highs and lows. Sport is like that because it is an art of human beings, and all the things that go with it. What is critical is hard work, consistency, and respect, and the team has great leaders who have led us through any storms. The important thing in football is to not let the tough moments stick around too long and get back on track as quickly as possible, and we have done that” And the progress of the season: “We are incredibly solid from front to back, and we are creating many chances every single game. Confidence in front of the goal will be important, as well as game management,  as many teams are after us now and treat our game as the biggest of the season.  We need to ride that emotion and prove that we are true professionals and see games out. A combination of winning the physical battle and the mental one is what will separate us. Being focused on the current moment is huge because we do not want to think too far ahead.  That is dangerous. We still have over half the games to play and a lot of time. Constant communication and respect between the team and staff will help with those goals. We have many capable people working with us, on and off the pitch, as long as we work in the same direction, I believe we can be unstoppable”.

Como 1907 Women’s Team–San Marino Academy: Ready for a Special Sunday https://comofootball.com/en/como-1907-womens-team-san-marino-academy-ready-for-a-special-sunday/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 14:17:22 +0000 https://comofootball.com/como-1907-femminile-san-marino-academy-pronti-ad-una-domenica-speciale/ On Sunday, 14 December, at 14:30, the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium will once again open its doors to women’s football. Having recently hosted the Italian national team for a friendly against Japan, the iconic ground overlooking Lake Como will now welcome our women’s first team side, who will play their 12th Serie B match against San Marino Academy.

The Bianco Blu, led by coach Selena Mazzantini in her first year in charge of Como 1907 Women, currently sit top of the table with 25 points, four clear of second-placed Cesena Women. In a particularly demanding league such as Serie B, where only one team earns promotion to Serie A at the end of the season, there is very little margin for error. The Lariane have so far recorded eight wins, one draw, and one defeat in a first half of the season that has already presented a number of unexpected challenges.

The hard-fought 0–1 win in Brescia, the 3–0 home victory over Venezia on a heavy, rain-soaked pitch, the defeat in Verona followed by the crucial win away at Cesena, and the last-second three points claimed against Trastevere: we are only in the opening stage of this campaign, yet this group has already shown character, personality, and unity, even though much of the squad arrived only this summer, immediately embracing this ambitious project.

Solidity is perhaps the most fitting word to describe Le Bianco Blu’s start to the season, solid as a group and defensively resolute, having conceded just five goals in ten matches, the best record in the division. With Fabiana Fierro in goal, fresh from a series of outstanding performances (particularly in Cesena), the position is in safe hands, while Emma Mustafic, born in 2006, has also earned her place. In coach Mazzantini’s four-woman defence, the flanks are occupied by Francesca Pittaccio on the right and Federica Rizza on the left, both summer arrivals from Sampdoria and Parma respectively. In the centre, several players have featured so far, including Elena Pisani—distinguished for her marking and ability on the ball—the young Giulia Trevisan (born in 2004), Federica Veritti, Denmark’s Cecilie Sandvej, and Ludovica Falloni, with Louise Eriksen also making a number of appearances.

The midfield has been equally impressive. Of the 22 goals scored by Como, making the Bianco Blu the third-best attacking side in the league, many have come, directly or indirectly, from this unit. Sofia Colombo, who joined in the summer from Sampdoria, is enjoying a highly productive season in front of goal, scoring five times from her role on the flank. Alongside Denmark’s Louise Eriksen and Slovenia’s Dominika Čonč, a regular for her national team, who provide balance in midfield, contributions from Elena Nichele (clinical in scoring the winner in the head-to-head against Cesena), Claudia Saggion (consistently intense and decisive), and Rossella Sardu (a key figure thanks to her experience and leadership) have been equally vital.

Wearing the captain’s armband and linking midfield with the attack is Vero Boquete, a true legend of women’s football. The first Spanish player to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or and the first to win the Champions League, lifting the trophy with FFC Frankfurt in 2015, the number 87, born in Santiago de Compostela, arrived on the shores of Lake Como last summer, bringing her exceptional technique and remarkable poise to strengthen the group both on and off the pitch. Leading the line are Elisa Del Estal, six goals to her name, making her the team’s top scorer and the third-highest in the league, thanks to her physical presence and pace, and Giusy Moraca, known for her flair and creativity. Roberta Picchi also plays a crucial role: a forward whose physicity and energy allow her to influence matches significantly, as she demonstrated against Trastevere, scoring the decisive goal in the 91st minute. The team can also count on the contributions of Martina Gelmetti and Adriana Martín, as well as Claudia Zorzetto and Kristin Carrer, who are currently injured but remain essential members of this special group.

The match at Sinigaglia on December 14 will certainly be an excellent opportunity to shed new light on women’s soccer, in a setting different from the usual, but it will also be a great opportunity to get to know these players, each with their own unique qualities and characteristics, and this group, at a stage in a journey that we hope will end in the best possible way.

Inter–Como: Match Preview https://comofootball.com/en/inter-como-match-preview/ Fri, 05 Dec 2025 17:42:10 +0000 https://comofootball.com/inter-como-match-preview/ The match scheduled for late Saturday afternoon at San Siro promises to be a high-intensity, fast-paced game between two teams separated by just three points in the standings. Inter, just one point off the top, go into the match against Como following a 2-0 away win at Pisa thanks to a brace from captain Lautaro Martinez. Como, meanwhile, go into the match at the Meazza in sixth place in the table after beating Sassuolo 2-0 at home.

This fixture also presents an intriguing contrast: Inter are currently the league’s most prolific attack (28 goals, one more than second-placed Bologna), while Como have the best defensive record in Serie A (just seven goals conceded, level with Roma). Saturday promises to be a spirited battle between two of the league’s most proactive and dynamic sides.

Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Inter-Como:

“Thank you to all the fans who will be with us tomorrow. This year, unfortunately, we’ve played many matches without them, and we felt their absence. Tomorrow, when I walk onto the pitch and look up at the third tier, I’ll feel immense pride. Our supporters deserve to enjoy moments like this, they give us so much, and we want to give something back.

“We’re a young team with plenty still to learn, and an evening like this is a wonderful opportunity for us. The players handle the pressure well, we’re a strong group, and I truly enjoy working with them every day.

“For us, there is no other way than continuing to build on the work we’re doing, knowing we’re facing a very strong side full of top players. We’ll go out there with the right mentality and ambition to play our game. We know we’ll need to deliver a perfect performance.”

Inter

Under Christian Chivu, the Nerazzurri have retained the 3-5-2 formation that characterised the team under Simone Inzaghi, while introducing some significant changes to their style of play. Although maintaining a positional approach, with constant rotations to disrupt opponents and maximise passing options, Chivu’s side now play with greater verticality than before.

Inter’s 28 goals in 13 league games reflect a highly effective attacking strategy. Their strength lies in the ability to occupy the penalty area and its edges, creating space for both wingers and forwards to exploit. The usual attacking duo of Thuram and Lautaro is now complemented by key contributions from Bonny and Pio Esposito. This allows Inter to fully utilise the physical presence and finishing ability of their forwards. The Nerazzurri currently have the league’s top scorer, Lautaro Martinez (six goals), alongside second-top scorer Hakan Calhanoglu (five goals, tied with four others).

At the start of the season, Inter’s attacking emphasis has led to some defensive vulnerability.  With 13 goals conceded, the Nerazzurri have the weakest defensive record among the top eight sides. Despite these defensive difficulties, the Nerazzurri added a player during the summer who immediately proved to be one of the team’s pillars: Manuel Akanji. Arriving from Borussia Dortmund, the Swiss defender is proving to be as fundamental in defense, aerial duels, and set pieces as he is in supporting the offense with his ability to drive forward with the ball at his feet.

Previous encounters

In Milan, Inter and Como have met 16 times: 14 wins for the home side, one draw, and just one win for Como. The Lariani’s last victory at the Meazza came on 14 May 1950, when goals from Rabitti and Ghiandi secured the historic triumph.

Como’s most recent goal at San Siro came in a Coppa Italia match on 30 October 1991, when Mazzoleni found the net. Tomorrow, the Bianco Blu will aim to end this long-standing streak.

Marc Oliver Kempf The Defender Who Found Renewal On The Lake https://comofootball.com/en/marc-oliver-kempf-the-defender-who-found-renewal-on-the-lake/ Fri, 05 Dec 2025 11:53:30 +0000 https://comofootball.com/?p=184618 Marc Oliver Kempf arrived in Como with the quiet conviction of a player who needed a different chapter. Since arriving at Como 1907 in August 2024 on a three-year deal the 30-year-old German centre-back has embraced both the challenge on the pitch and the change of scenery off it. A new league. A new culture. A new rhythm.

He talks about it now with a sense of calm clarity. The city feels ordered and welcoming. The lake, he says, gives you a stillness that settles you before you even realise. Leaving Germany was hard but necessary and the shift to a new language and a new culture has opened him up. On the pitch he feels the growth each week. The team has found a rhythm that feels good and he smiles when he says that anyone who has been to Como knows what this place offers.

The move itself began with data. Scouts flagged him early and then the coach, Cesc Fàbregas picked up the phone. The call was short but decisive. Kempf felt the honesty and the scale of the project. For a footballer, he says, the privilege is real. Not many people get the chance to change country through their work. This time he took it.

His admiration for Fabregas is obvious. He talks about the intensity on the training pitch and the legacy of a man who played for his country, Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona. You can see the high standards in every drill.

Off the pitch Kempf settled fast. English speakers in the squad helped those first few weeks and he has committed fully to learning Italian. Finding a teacher who knew both German and Italian took time but now the lessons have become a weekly anchor. He says he understands almost everything in training even if the speaking still pushes him every day.

Match days at the Sinigaglia have taken him by surprise. He calls it an old stadium with a pulse. In Germany he played in arenas that held forty or fifty thousand people. Here ten thousand stand right above the pitch and create something fierce and close. The noise is direct. The atmosphere wraps around you.

His reading of the differences between the Italian and German games is instinctive. Italy is more tactical, he says. Every day includes some form of tactical work and possession is prized as a way to regain control after transition. In Germany the running demand is higher and the game is more physical with faster swings of momentum.

The moment that has defined his journey so far arrived on an afternoon that will live in Como for decades. A 2-0 win against Juventus. Kempf scored the first goal arriving at the far post he met a cross from Nico Paz and drove it into the net with a combination of timing and presence and then defended like a man carrying the mood of the entire stadium. He won duels. He blocked shots. He fought for every ball. Eight of the team’s twenty one clearances belonged to him. The bandage wrapped around his head in the second half told the rest of the story.

This defensive work has defined Como’s rise. The team has faced amongst the  fewest shots on target in Serie A and ranks among the best in expected goals conceded. A side praised for its attacking spark has become one of the most efficient and intense defensive units in the league. Kempf’s role in that transformation is clear. Strong in the air. Calm with the ball. Fierce in duels. Reliable in the moments that matter most.

His fortieth appearance for the club delivered the landmark. The first win over Juventus in seventy three years sealed by his instinct and his determination.

When you speak to him now you sense a player who sees the weight of this chapter. From his youth days in Frankfurt through Freiburg Stuttgart and Hertha he has carried himself with consistency. At Como he has found renewal. A fresh purpose. A sense of belonging. On a lake that reflects the mountains and the sky he has become part of the landscape. A leader. A guardian. A player whose presence gives shape to the club’s ambition.

Sunday at the Sinigaglia — A December Afternoon Game for Como 1907 Women’s Team https://comofootball.com/en/sunday-at-the-sinigaglia-a-december-afternoon-game-for-como-1907-womens-team/ Fri, 05 Dec 2025 11:00:20 +0000 https://comofootball.com/?p=184590 CThere is a particular atmosphere that settles over the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia in winter. The quiet curve of the lake, the clear light, the feeling that this stadium is part of the city’s rhythm. Recent weeks have reminded us of its place in the wider game too, with the Italian Women’s National Team playing a friendly against Japan here on 24 October and filling the ground with energy and pride.

On Sunday 14 December at 14.30 the Como 1907 Women will once again step onto the Sinigaglia pitch to face San Marino Academy Women. This December the men have no home matches, which makes the upcoming fixture even more of an important moment for supporters to come together.

The women have shown strong form across the season so far. They have been solid defensively, confident going forward, and consistent in their performances. Their place near the top of Serie B reflects a team that has found balance and momentum.

San Marino Academy Women arrive from a more challenging run of results, but fixtures like this are never predictable. Every match brings its own intensity, and the support inside the Sinigaglia can play its part.

With no other home fixtures at the stadium this month, this is a perfect moment for the Como community to come together.

Bring friends, bring family, bring your colours. Fill the stands, make noise, and show what support in this city means.

LTicket information will be released soon.

Sunday 14 December. Kick off at 14.30. The Sinigaglia open, the team on the grass, and an afternoon of football that belongs to Como.

Como 1907 Ventures Hosts First-Ever Pitch Day https://comofootball.com/en/como-1907-ventures-hosts-first-ever-pitch-day-showcasing-early-stage-innovation-across-health-climate-mobility-and-the-experience-economy/ Thu, 04 Dec 2025 13:16:48 +0000 https://comofootball.com/como-1907-ventures-ospita-il-primo-pitch-day-presentando-le-innovazioni-in-fase-iniziale-nei-settori-della-salute-del-clima-della-mobilita-e-delleconomia-dellesperienza/ Como 1907 Ventures Hosts First-Ever Pitch Day, Showcasing Early-Stage Innovation Across Health, Climate, Mobility and the Experience Economy

Como 1907 and The Players Fund hosted the inaugural Venture Pitch Day ahead of the club’s 2-0 win over U.S. Sassuolo Calcio, watched on by Hollywood actors Chris Pine and Michael Fassbender.

Lake Como, Italy – November 28, 2025 – Como 1907 today hosted the inaugural Como 1907 Ventures Pitch Day, bringing together investors, founders and operators for an intimate exploration of new technologies spanning health, software, machine learning, climate, performance and next-generation mobility. The event marks the first public showcase of the club’s venture programme, developed in partnership with The Players Fund, the world’s largest athlete-led venture capital platform.

The morning opened with a conversation on the ambitions behind Como 1907 Ventures and how the club, together with The Players Fund, is building a model where a football team functions as a genuine venture platform rather than a traditional rights-holder.

Senior leaders from companies including Apple, Revolut, Uber and Eight Sleep watched on as founders from Connectome Health, Collecto App, Eoliann and Wayla Italia demonstrated how elite sport can act as a real-world platform for early-stage products and technologies in non-sports adjacent verticals.

Two panel sessions — Harnessing the Experience Economy and Building a Business in Health & Wellness — gave further space for additional founders, including Beautiful Destinations, Guestia, NOWATCH, and Lombardy-based Serenis and YDUN, to share insights on emerging consumer behaviour, wellness trends, and the opportunities shaping Europe’s next wave of innovation.

European technology show etn. also recorded a livestream from the villa, with hosts Ronan Chambers and Luke Knight speaking with innovators such as Alex Prokofjev (RollUpEurope), Marcel van Lohuizen (CUE Labs), Luca Ferraresi (P101), Salvatore Zola (Collecto), Marco Squarci and Dominik Vacikar (Specter).

The programme concluded with a private lakeside lunch before guests joined an exclusive VIP matchday experience for the evening’s Serie A fixture against U.S. Sassuolo Calcio — a 2–0 victory for Cesc Fàbregas’ Como 1907, watched by Hollywood actors Chris Pine and Michael Fassbender.

Andy Marston, Head of Corporate Venture at The Players Fund, commented:

“This was the first time we could give people a proper look at what we’re building with Como 1907 Ventures, so the ambition was to reflect the breadth of where a programme like this can go. The companies in the room spanned neuroscience, climate tech, mobility and collectables, reflecting how a club environment can touch far more categories than sport normally admits.

We’ve mapped specific assets the club can offer — from product testing and internal feedback loops to warm introductions to blue-chip partners. Each agreement is bespoke, designed to create a genuine win-win rather than the heavy-handed equity swaps you can sometimes see in sport. It’s early days, but today was an important step in showing what we believe this model can become.”

Ryan Shelton, Chief Revenue Officer at Como 1907, added:

“To be clear, this isn’t a branding exercise. This isn’t about ‘disruption’ for the sake of sounding different. This is about building real things, with real outcomes.

Como 1907 Ventures is a serious platform. Over time, we aim for it to become an investable, credible force in early-stage innovation. Yes, we’ll incubate ideas. But we’ll also test, refine and scale them, with the infrastructure of a rising global football club as our launchpad. This is just the beginning. Como is more than a club. It’s a home for global ambition.”

The inaugural Pitch Day reinforces Como 1907’s long-term vision to position the club at the intersection of sport, venture capital and culture — and signals how elite football can create meaningful pathways for entrepreneurship, investment and breakthrough technologies.
